Review on - Shadows of the Land

NAME: SHADOWS OF THE LAND
AUTHOR: SWATI MISHRA
PUBLISHED BY: MOMENTS PUBLISHERS

The Shadows of the lands, this story is a personal experience of the Author herself - of her living in India, going to America and then returning back to her native soil, India.

It is not a novel, which is a love story (with sex scenes! Off course), or about the IIT life, or is funny and has romance in bits, which makes you feel – “ah, same old tale, again!!” But, it is rather bit of maturely carved experience of the Author and it is a bit intriguing one!

The story starts from author’s early days of childhood, where she was a voracious reader, a dreamer and a bit of rebel in her family!!  How she dreamt of someday going to foreign land and settle there!!

Years later, when she has finished with her degree in Architecture and wishes to fly to America to get the Master’s in the same, her parents, rather her dad is not so supportive for this choice of hers, for his beliefs and his rules. A kind of strong headed that she was she tries all her might to get herself to the country of her dreams – America!!

This country gave her lot more struggles, than she had anticipated. But for her dreams, she outdo them all, one by one, slowly and steadily.
From an apartment to stay to getting a job, from changing her visa status F-1 to H-1B to getting married, from adjusting with new responsibilities to getting her baby an Indian birth certificate in a foreign land and so on!! The list doesn’t stop here, she later aspires to come back to India and serve her mother land.

It’s all divided in 3 phases of her life – The sunrise, the Eclipse and the Sunset; each having it own beauty and story.

The author very descriptively writes about the all the phases, which makes the reader to get a more indulging and a realistic, feel of the story. At some point, even you wish to have bigger dreams and to take a path that can let you follow them, whereas at some point it gives us a guilt feel – a feel I guess all NRI’s as well as those residing here can get to know very well.

8 long years!! Yes!! 8 years she was in America, struggling, enjoying, living her life, her dreams – but these years also helped her to re discover her identity – from a woman who was unaware of her being to a woman she believes in herself, who beams with amusement for the individuality of her country, her religion!!

This book is a motivation for thousands of people, who leave their motherland, and move to a foreign soil in desire of learning, earning in dollars and getting a better life, in search of better prospects. But then it is difficult to adjust between two different countries, moreover two different cultures!!

This book is an inspiration for all those who have left their country and are in a dilemma to return back home.
Unfathomable, exhilarating, appealing, realistic – are the words which can be used best to describe this book!! It touches the heart, the Indian feelings – the patriotic ones!!

At some points, it really gets a bit stretched out and too much of details about everything, especially in the phases eclipse and sunset, but then that’s ok!! It’s just how well she wanted it to be enlighten the readers!!

All and all, I would give it 4.5 out of 5 for this beautiful book, which is not a love story yet made me jump with excitement to find out the conclusion of the story!!

For knowing the end, go grab this book, and get to know that it isn’t that easy for everyone who has to leave their everything back her and settle down there, that it is always an option for coming back – to your country, your people, your land J
