Review: The Spy by Paulo Coelho
Author:
Paulo Coelho
Genre:
Fiction
Published
by: Penguin Books India
The Spy is a story
of a beautiful and attractive woman – Mata Hari.
Though based on the
real life incidents of Mata Hari, the story is strikingly reconstructed by
Paulo Coleho, based on the historical information.
Margarethe Zelle.
This was her real name.
She always wanted
to be an independent woman since her early days of childhood. She married an
army officer who was 21 years older than she. Days worsened after marriage and
after she delivered her first child.
Finally, when she
could not take it any long, she ran away from Indonesia to Paris, where she was
known for her seductive dance moves and her eye-catching appearance.
She dazed and
delighted her audience and she beguiled that era’s (1895-1916) most influential
and richest men.
However, as terror consumed
the country at war, she was under the eyes of suspicion. In 1917, she was arrested
in her hotel room in Paris and accused of spying.
The book is to be
told in Mata Hari’s voice through her final letter, is a story of a woman who
dared to defy the convention and hence had to pay the ultimate price.
5 out of 5 star for
this beautiful and enthralling book.
